DescriptionYesterday, my wife and I attended an auction in Chicago. Among the lots were several items that used to be in the collection of Forrest J. Ackerman, who had sold them to the consignor back in 2004. Forry's favorite SF artist was the great Frank R. Paul, and he owned many Paul originals. He became friends with Paul and commissioned him on a few occasions to do SF paintings, sometimes based on Paul SF covers, but inserting Forry into them. My friend Jerry Weist had one, which was created to look like a cover for Gernsback's "Science and Invention", where Forry is meeting a Martian. However, he had Paul paint the title as "Martian Science Fiction."The first SF magazine Forry ever purchased was the October 1926 issue of "Amazing Stories." At one point Forry commissioned Paul to recreate the cover art for this issue, but inserting Forry and a few other differences into the painting, such as the name of the rocket ship. This time it was retitled as "Amazing Forries", and in 1976 Forry had it printed as the cover of a magazine he had published about himself. We picked up that Paul painting in yesterday's auction. i had the same amount bid as you and then switched over to the auction house live bidding for the actual auction and it looked like i was winning with no other bids but afterwards i saw i lost! it's because i put in my bid last minute and yours being first takes precedence. i would have bid higher if i had known but it didn't tell me i was losing! congrats! i had a feeling you got it. i'm still really upset though...

Such a great personal commission in itself from one of the all time greats! The history of it is outstanding as you are now the second person to ever own this.
