DescriptionThe main incentive for getting this page is that I already owned the following one (which can be seen in this very gallery), making for a nice Thing action sequence. The second one was that it is indeed a nice Thing page from a creative team that drew him very well. The first panel with the FF’s most popular characters is very cool at establishing the jungle scenery as Johnny lights it up. They’ve seen a lot but they both look worried or at least alert as big piece of rock has been thrown to crush their campfire. Then they go on the hunt for their foe and I really like Ben’s position here, like he is going into stealth, Wolverine like, mode. He is entering the shadows which cover his features, showing how dead serious he is. That profile in the third panel is fantastic (…). Just look how tense Ben is here, with his eye looking for danger off panel. He is not afraid, just ready. In the 4rth panel, he happens on the big gorilla. Ryan even managed to include a very 90s ish full shot of the moon in this clever horizontal panel that slows the reader in his reading progression. That fifth panel showcasing on the mean gorilla is excellent. The motion angle and the tilted head make for great dynamism and add to the dangerosity of this foe. I also love such details that Ryan included such as his uneven teeth or the absence of pupils. Then the last panel is the set up for the next page with again a great use of layout and perspective to have the gorilla menacingly leap from the foreground unto Ben in the background as he seems boxed in by his foe. Ben’s body language is perfect here as he recoils in order to deliver his clobbering blow. I will also compliment the great shots of nature throughout the page. Ryan was never an artist to take shortcuts and you can experience it on a page like this one. Bulanadi was a great fit for Ryan, including lots of crispy details and lines on his otherwise more classic approach. I especially like how he kept playing with shadows and textures on the tiles of Ben’s skin (see panel 4 for a great example of this). Let me finally comment on the price of this one which I bought this year. Have you noticed how any dealer is pushing any of those Ryan/Bulanadi pages into the 1k/1.5k/2k or above territory where they rarely reach those levels at auction (outside of HA and their “generous” buyer’s fees)? I barely paid half of that at auction. Social/Sharing |

The Ryan/Bilanadi era was pretty fun and they did indeed draw a pretty nice Thing. As the coolest member of the Fantastic Four and the one that therefore carries the bulk of the value and demand of any original page, this is as strong of an example as you'll find!

good score! Really nice Thing page and even better that you were able to add it to your other page and have a 2 page sequence. Congrats!

Well, Ben did kinda insult him, right?! Digging the shading on Ben in panel 4. Congrats, man!

I really enjoyed this era of FF stories and Paul Ryan was a big reason why. And I agree with you about the wild swings in price :) Mostly because I've been looking for a nice example from this run too!

That page is amazing an really beautiful. The Thing is very well rendered in it. That 5th panel is extraordinary. It is just an aperitive of the batlle that is coming!

Gorgeous Fantastic Four page by Paul Ryan and Danny Bulanadi! really well composed page with Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm searching through the jungle to find their attacker. I love the way Paul Ryan draws the Thing, he's able to make that pile of rocks express such real emotions. That third panel is especially emotive! Fantastic scene when Ben discovers the powerful gorilla in the fourth panel. And I love the expression on the gorilla in panel five--Funny that Ben calls HIM ugly! The whole page is almost cinematic in its storytelling. Gorgeous inks by Bulanadi really make the page pop. Love the inking on the Thing in the fourth panel! Just a great page overall. What a terrific pick-up, congrats!

Congrats on a beautiful page! Bulanadi did an amazing job inking over Ryan's pencils.
