Already a popular sensation as an Astounding Science Fiction magazine serial (1953) and as a Doubleday hardcover (1954), Hal Clement's futuristic "Mission of Gravity" resurfaced in 1958 as the 33rd Galaxy Novels paperback, sporting a finalized version of this emphatic cover-concept by Wally Wood. Wood had asserted his pre-eminence as an SF illustrator while working for EC Comics' Weird Science, and his mastery transferred readily to the prose-SF publishing sector. The art depicts heroic Charles Lackland, a scientist who undertakes a rescue assignment in a heavy-gravity environment. Ink, ink-wash, and white watercolor over graphite on Bristol board.

Purchased from the Roger Hill collection at the recent Heritage Signature Auction which I attended in person, to be there in support of Terry and her family. Roger was a very close friend for over 40 years. He was an amazing collector and one of the most knowledgeable comic historians and authors in our field. He is greatly missed.
