Description
From the Heritage Write-up:
Wally Wood "Mission of Gravity" Cover Preliminary Original Art (Galaxy Publ., 1958). Already a popular sensation as an Astounding Science Fiction magazine serial (1953) and as a Doubleday hardcover (1954), Hal Clement's futuristic "Mission of Gravity" resurfaced in 1958 as the 33rd Galaxy Novels paperback, sporting a finalized version of this emphatic cover-concept by Wally Wood. Wood had asserted his pre-eminence as an SF illustrator while working for EC Comics' Weird Science, and his mastery transferred readily to the prose-SF publishing sector. The art depicts heroic Charles Lackland, a scientist who undertakes a rescue assignment in a heavy-gravity environment. Ink, ink-wash, and white watercolor over graphite on Bristol board.

Purchased from the Roger Hill collection at the recent Heritage Signature Auction which I attended in person, to be there in support of Terry and her family. Roger was a very close friend for over 40 years. He was an amazing collector and one of the most knowledgeable comic historians and authors in our field. He is greatly missed.

The concerned look in the eyes is a lot more effective than the final stoic look.  It's more genuine drama in this version.

This looks rushed but isn't.  An artist in full control.

This is cool, shows the raw genius of Wood. Prelims can be very enlightening when looking at a great artist's work.
