Description

John Asaro is a masterful painter and sculptor, and I was delighted to pick up these two pieces of his back in the late 90s.

These photos don't do them justice, but I love the color choices and brushstokes in both of these prelims. Asaro's 3-D work strongly informs his use of planes in designing and indicating the forms in his paintings, especially the figures and faces of his subjects. You may have seen the "Asaro Head", an abstracted model of the human head artists study from in order to learn the planes of the face.

Subjectwise, these are highly representative of the work that made him famous --- images of women and children by the water. Clearly influenced by the great Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla, Asaro dialed up the color and abstracted the forms a bit to arrive at his signature style.

Of course CAF is a site devoted to comic art, but it has long been established that fine art, illustration art and comic art influence and inspire each other. So the display of paintings like this is certainly welcome and appreciated by those who love figurative art as a whole!

Gorgeous painting by John Asaro! Love this study of a woman and child on a beach on a sunny day with waves pouring in. Asaro's work has a real feeling of plein air paintings done on location. I don't know if this was done that way or not, but I do love the way Asaro's style makes you feel like this is a moment in time, captured quickly before it was gone. Love the thick brushstrokes Asaro uses, they're very evocative of the surf and the sea. The strong colors give the painting a very contemporary look to my eye. Thanks for sharing!
