DescriptionGrowing up in awe of The Studio crew, I read about them in various fanzines every chance I got. I’m not quite sure when I became aware of their love of Al Williamson’s work but that little nugget of information always delighted me, that these amazing artists (especially Michael Kaluta and Jeffrey Catherine Jones) had their own art heroes who would then turn around and show their respect to the next generation.Here’s a nice example of what I am talking about. Jones created limited edition statues of a girl (1970) and of a caveman (1973) gifting copies of each to Williamson. (Shots of the caveman statue can be found in the Additional Images.) Late in 1977 Williamson worked Jones’ caveman statue into his Secret Agent Corrigan. It was drawn in a total of 24 strips starting 10/21/77, sporadically appearing over several weeks with the last one dated 12/14/77. A prominent element in the storyline with sculptress Diana Shane, I always wondered what Jones thought about it but would like to think she thought it was pretty cool. I sure did. Two other examples of this statue being used in this Corrigan series can be found in the CAF galleries of Gianluca Bellisario and Ted Latner, both of them excellent. The girl statue would similarly be utilized by Williamson in the story “Relic” (Epic #27, Dec. 1984) written by Archie Goodwin. A fantastic posting on this can be found here.
