Description

One of America's longest running newspaper strips spun off from the similarly long-lived Beetle Bailey strip. Lois Bailey Flagston is Beetle's sister, a harried suburban housewife with her husband Hiram, a teen son, precocious twin grade schoolers, and an infant… not far from the Simpson’s later arrangement!

In this strip, the frequently surly teen Chip thinks that being sick means he deserves to be pampered. As seen here, infectious disease did result in lengthy school absences in those days; today Chip would be hustled back to school as soon as his fever breaks for 24 hours.

Over the decades this strip has run, Chip would age several years and grow bangs that obscured his eyes, but he never lost his love of comic books. Lois meanwhile would see her bust shrink substantially. Dik Browne’s son Chance began assisting his father on art in 1979 and took over completely in 1989, the year his father died. Chance continued until his own death in 2024.

Philco’s battery-powered, transistor-driven, portable television set was brand new in 1959, a marvel of modern technology. Apparently the Flagstons were early adopters.

Really cool vintage strip. I always like ones with reference to comic books!

Yeah, but back then they didn't have vaccine regulations to go to school.  So they had to make sure the diseases wouldn't be contagious.  The good old days.
