For most of the twentieth century, newspaper syndication was the "brass ring" of cartooning, with guaranteed daily or weekly publication, and corresponding income security. Super heroes were not completely absent from this space, but humor, romance, and action series predominated. Giants like Caniff, Raymond, and Foster made their mark, developing tropes that entered the world of comic books as well. Indeed, the first comic books consisted of reprints of newspaper strip material.
