Description

Klara sends a parting letter to Prince Rudolf, the father of her unborn child. He reads it while his servant Loshchek watches with a worried look. The voiceover captions read:

"Mayerling, August 1888."

"Your Highness, forgive me. I know that I deeply displease you, and I regret it, but with this letter I inform you of my resignation with immediate effect from your service in Mayerling. Unfortunately, pregnancy prevents me from continuing my assignment with you and makes it impossible for me to constantly travel between my home and your home. However, it is not only my condition that keeps me at home. The duties of wife and future mother, to which I am now subjected, take precedence. I know that you will understand. I remember you in my prayers. With unchanged esteem and dedication. Klara."

We see that Klara's husband is abusing her again, striking her so hard that her fall knocks over a chair in between panels. Without dialogue, we don't know whether he knows she's pregnant yet, or thinks the baby is his. (It's Rudolf's.) The final panel is an example of good cinematography. We don't need to see Rudolf's face to know his combination of anger and sorrow.

Don't you know we could have been on easy street if the prince just paid child support?
