DescriptionAfter a few pages of action, Martin begins another lengthy narration, this time about the death of Prince Rudolf: “Mayerling Castle, Austria. Two days later.” “We leave Germany and the sumptuous Neuschwanstein Castle to continue east into Austria, where, just over five hours by car, in Mayerling near Vienna, stands this 16th-century estate. In 1887, Crown Prince Rudolf, son of Sisi and Franz Joseph, bought it for a hunting lodge, and it was here that in 1889 he took his own life together with his lover, Baroness Mary Vetsera. The emperor, grieving and shocked, then transformed his son's last residence into a sort of sanctuary dedicated to him.” “The wing where the bedroom was located, the site of the tragedy, was demolished and a small church was built in its place. In this way, the Catholic Franz Joseph thought he could make amends for the wicked act committed by his son. The emperor built a temple on the estate, later handing over the property to the Carmelite nuns, who turned it into a convent. Mayerling Castle is still a religious building today. But what drove a young crown prince to such a desperate act? It has been hypothesized that the conflicts with his father were at the root of it, which led to growing dissatisfaction and an increasingly gloomy view of life.” Social/Sharing |

One would have thought that this hard hitting journalist would have pivoted to uncovering more of the group that tried to kill him! However, these pages bring back the history that would link up to the modern day situation.
