Description

The arranged marriage of Prince Rudolf of Austria and Princess Stephanie of Belgium brings grief to them both:

“The Holy Roman Emperor had chosen her because she came from an important European royal family. Furthermore, Stephanie was a devout Catholic and this -- in Franz Joseph's intentions -- would have strengthened the bond between Austria-Hungary and the Papal States. But it was a loveless marriage, destined to fail. Not even the birth of their little girl, Elisabeth, called Erzsi, managed to save the marriage. Rudolf, a radical and progressive, was strongly criticized by his wife, who wondered what fate the empire would have under his leadership. The prince increasingly took refuge in alcohol and led a libertine life among countless lovers, the most famous of whom was Mitzi Kaspar, originally an actress, whom Rudolf met in a high-class brothel.”

“Because of his acquaintances, the prince contracted a disease that can lead to infertility, and then transmitted the infection to his wife. Convinced that he could no longer have children, he fell into despair. The already precarious marital balance between Rudolf and Stephanie was definitively broken. The prince's sense of guilt was enormous towards both his father and the empire, which he would never again be able to provide a male heir. To try to cure the disease, Rudolf began taking morphine and opiates, to which he soon became addicted.”

The working script was more specific that Rudolf gave his wife gonorrhea. Mitzi Kaspar died of syphilis at the age of 43.
