DescriptionUp to this point, the book has been essentially a monologue by Martin Mystère concering Prince Rudolf. Now it transitions to an actual flashback of scenes from Rudolf’s life, after one final page of narration from Martin: “Having fallen into depression, the prince began to have suicidal thoughts and confided them to Mitzi, his lover, who apparently managed to stop him several times at the last moment. The woman tried to notify the police on several occasions, but was never believed. Her words were dismissed as gossip. ”During this period, to avoid his father, his wife Stefanie, and the court environment, Rudolf bought the property of Mayerling. In 1888, without informing Franz Joseph or Stephanie, Rudolf asked the Pope to annul his marriage. The pontiff refused. But this latest rash move infuriated the emperor, who ordered his son to behave as he instructed, to save his marriage and his public image, and to adopt a lifestyle more befitting that of an heir to the throne of an empire.” “Mayerling, Spring 1888.” (The flashback begins as Rudolf returns to his new home-away-from-home.) “Welcome back, Your Highness.” “Thank you, Loschek. Any news from Miss Kaspar?” (His mistress, the actress/courtesan Mitzi Kaspar) “None, Your Highness.” (The bald servant gossips) “Hmmm... I wonder what he finds in that woman, so commonplace and infinitely beneath his station.” “Don’t judge him. Even a prince can feel lonely.” Eh, loneliness is not a good excuse to become a serial womanizer passing around venereal diseases and heartbreak, but Martin has shown us enough of Rudolf’s miserable childhood that we’re not surprised to see him share that misery as an adult, alienated from his family. There are no winners here, only colliding tragedies. Social/Sharing |
