DescriptionCaptain Atom #51 Pg. 13Pencils by Colleen Doran Inks by Terry Austin Written by Kelley Puckett As a long-time contributor/supporter to Colleen Doran's Patreon community, occasionally she will send me a care package of merch, books, prints, and sometimes even original art from projects she has done. This page came from one of those packages. Being completely honest, Captain Atom isn't a title I have much knowledge about so this is not the kind of page/piece I would have sought out on my own, but I find it difficult to re-sell "gifts" of any kind personally and even though I know it's a benefit of my patronage I never expect to get anything. Maybe I'll find the right Captain Atom fan to re-gift it to down the line, but for now it stays in my collection. This issue was released in 1991 by DC Comics in Volume 2 of Captain Atom, and that's about the extent of what I could tell you about it, as I have not read the issue or really any Captain Atom standalone comics. There's a guy (is it Captain Atom? I don't know!) having an argument with his father over the phone about rescuing a woman and saving her life. After he hangs up he does a bit of smooth talkin' to his lady, I wish they played the rest of that out on this page though haha. Cut to the father lamenting how his son is too much like how he used to be. Then there's a scene in the final panel where a mother is giving advice to her child about avoiding bullies at school. *shrug emoji* It is the first page inked by Terry Austin that I've ever had though, so that's pretty cool actually and it's illustrated excellently! Ok, first thing you need to do is talk to the Russo family at the Rose room. Once you have done that then get back to me.

Love the honesty, I don't know much about this title and character either. But to get this without expecting anything, that's soooo awesome. Must have been a real treat seeing this in the package of material. Cheers on unexpected surprises that fit in nicely with this hobby.

Before seeing the colored image..was thinking about the guy's shirt and how the pattern on it could be used for camouflage..and then the 2nd tier 1st panel had the stain glass lamp and I felt kind of vindicated (in black and white at least). Long way to say Congrats Kavi!

I really like the line art and the fact Terry Austin worked on it makes it even better!

When you stand back and look at the entire page at arm's length, all the different line patterns really stand out. I also really like how Austin's inks look over Doran's pencils. They make a nice combo!

"There's a guy (is it Captain Atom? I don't know!) having an argument with his father over the phone about rescuing a woman and saving her life."
In your defense, this was a one-off issue that didn't exactly feature Captain Atom. The old man/father's name is 'Pop' and the guy is Pop's son and is never outright named. Pop is later inspired (by a news broadcast where Captain Atom gives a speech) to save his son from the criminal element in the neighborhood (who want payback for the earlier rescue).
The thing that stood out to me was that the page was drawn on a Marvel board.

Inks by a giant
And I was just a kid
I was always trying
To do Austin inks he did
I can't still remember any lesson dad taught me
Growing up learning of bullies
Like my old man
She was Doran
I hung up the phone line
'Cause she was the kindest
She gave me art this time
She knew how to lift Atom
And when to Patreon
Looking back, she always had Captain
My Doran

Austin's inks always elevate the artist he is inking as seen here.

Great illustration all around and those last 2 panels are particularly compelling.

Lovely page. Has all the hallmarks of a Doran page- the attention to detail, the woman's hair, the guys shirt, the ornate lamp, the backgrounds, the changes in viewing angles and the expressiveness of the characters.
