DescriptionAn ancient monk tells Martin what happened 130 years ago, but before he can use that information... “Good… good heavens…” “This is what Mikhail told Rudolph, and you had already guessed it, didn't you, Professor Martin Mystère?” “Do you know who I am? But how...” “I could tell you that 'I know many things.' That would be a nice catchphrase, appropriate for the moment. Or simply that you signed the visitors' book at the entrance, and for a moment you forgot about it, which is understandable, given the circumstances. Here, this is the diary of Rudolph of Habsburg-Lorraine. He left it here more than a century ago, and we have been guarding it ever since. And we will always guard it.” Suddenly, Captain Steiner appears, leading some Nazi thugs, one of whom shoots Venerable Dzordzh in the head. “I don’t think so! I really don’t think so!” Martin cries out: “Noooo!” “The diary, Mystère. Give me the diary, now!” “Captain Steiner! You?” “I told you to go back home, Professor.” “Devils of hell! These men... are the ones who attacked us at the Eagle's Nest.” The stark, background-free, birds-eye shot in the final panel is unusual but helps us to understand the staging of the scene. You may recall that we last saw Steiner in a Bavarian hospital. Most of this story has unfolded as I expected, but this moment genuinely surprised me. I didn't expect to see the German nazi punks come all the way to the Urals, nor did I suspect that Captain Steiner was a traitor all along, even though he is a literal skinhead. Even if Steiner is a villain, it would have been more plausible for him to have hired a local Russian gang as muscle. Social/Sharing |

I think the local gangsters didn't want to work for these creeps. They have enough self respect to not take their money.
