DescriptionPrince Rudolf is still trying to get his former girlfriend Klara to give up her baby to him; for some reason she's ghosting him. He enlists his new girlfriend Maria to help out: “Mayerling. Two weeks later.” “... I wrote to Klara again, but this time no sealing wax. No seals. You will write the address on the envelope, so that it appears to be from a friend. I hope that will be enough to fool her husband.” “Why don't you go straight to her with your guards?” “We don’t need any more scandals at court. If my father were to find out anything about this, he would exile me.” “But why did you leave your diary in that monastery? Couldn't you have taken it away with you?” “I couldn't risk someone finding it, here... But I didn't feel like destroying it either. It's a part of me, I don't know if you understand.” “The monks will guard it. It was the best choice. And I hope to make the best choice with Klara too.” “I am writing to you again after a period of absence to inform you of some matters that also concern you and the child who will be born... Which, if I have calculated correctly, will happen at the end of April 1889. Unfortunately, the fate of our son is linked to a huge tragedy that perhaps we will be able to avoid if you agree to move to a safe place, under my temporary protection. Read this letter to the end, explain everything to us. Please, I implore you. Listen to me! Do as I say. The future depends on it. Not ours, but that of all humanity.” We're not surprised that Klara wants nothing to do with the man who has brought her so much grief, and she doesn't even know that he's moved on to an even younger girlfriend (sixteen, to Klara's nineteen). For 19, they really turn Klara into an old granny with that chair in front of the fireplace and short hairstyle. Screw this prince, the fate of humanity is at stake, but not worth it to get in trouble with daddy.

It's safe to say Prince Rudolf was not a great person. The worst is yet to come.
From photos, Klara really did look like that, including short hair and older than her age. As for the "spinster by the fireplace" look, hey, Germany was cold in the winter! This scene takes place in December 1888.
