Description

Martin's failed mission to the Urals ends, as he returns his rental car and prepares to board a flight west.

“Yekaterinburg Airport. Today.”

“In any case, for us this story can be considered concluded. And we know how it ended for Rudolf of Bavaria. He took his own life in Mayerling, together with that of the young Baroness Mary Vetsera. Feeling responsible for the events that Pastor Mikhail had shown him in that vision must have undoubtedly thrown the prince into the darkest despair. He was a sensitive soul, and already prone to depression, like his unfortunate cousin Ludwig...”

“Yes, but then why didn't he kill himself immediately? Instead, he and the Baroness returned to Austria.”

“Perhaps initially he didn't harbor suicidal intentions, but then he got worse.”

“Hmm... yes, that's certainly possible. Or maybe there's another explanation. I think Rudolf tried to convince Klara if not to terminate the pregnancy, at least to go away with the child, in the hope of changing the future.”

The previous issue contained speculation that Mary died of a botched abortion. But according to a letter she wrote to her sister (and contrary to the timeline depicted in our story), Mary had lost her virginity to Rudolf only two weeks before their joint suicide, so she wouldn't have even known she was pregnant. Decades later, her suicide note, on Mayerling stationery, addressed to her mother, was discovered in a safety deposit box, describing how she didn't want crazy Rudolf to go alone. And he let her, the jerk. See additional images.
