Description
This splash page from Annihilation: Conquest #6, released April 16, 2008, marks the first time the modern Guardians of the Galaxy team appears together in a single comic. It is the most visually memorable page from this gold key issue and the only splash that directly relates to the team’s joining. The image captures the moment Drax and Gamora enter the story, leading to their alignment with the other future Guardians of the Galaxy.

The formal naming of the team occurs one issue later in Guardians of the Galaxy (Vol. 2) #1, when Mantis foresees the naming of the group and helps label them the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, this issue contains multiple pages of historical significance. The widely recognized formation page, penciled by Tom Raney, which features all team members except Groot. Groot is present but tucked into Rocket Raccoon’s pocket. The first page to depict all members, including Groot, appears later in the issue and was penciled by Wellington Alves. However, both formation pages happen to be interior pages.

This page includes Nova, Drax, and Gamora and contributes to the visual and narrative assembly of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy. Alongside Page 7 and Page 30, it helps document the formation of the team and showcases the artistic contributions of Tom Raney and Wellington Alves to this pivotal chapter in Marvel cosmic history.

Whoa what a stunning splash!!  Wellinton and Scott TOTALLY killed it.  Major congrats, Ian, and happy that you were alerted to this one so you didn't miss out on a major collecting goal.

My collecting goals have really become focused recently and there are only a few key pages I have yet to add to my collection. This page happened to take the pressure off me feeling like I needed to chase the first image of them together. Now I have all the characters from this issue that show up on what I personally count as the first page. I still wouldn't mind having it, but this splash being even more striking, the need has decreased for me, which is why I am now fine openly talking about it. There are two pages that I would personally count as the first page. One being one I have seen before, which was a Tom Raney/Scott Hanna page which has all the characters except for Groot, but on technicality Groot is in Rocket Raccoons pocket not visible as a twig. The page I had been hoping for, which is the Wellinton Alves second from the last page where Groot is included. I now have a split of pages with the main characters drawn by both the artists from this issue, which I personally feel equally are all part of this key issue where they come together. If hung together they are the beginning of the team in my eyes, so I could stop collecting today and be a happy man. I am not sure how often collecting goals like these are ever achieved, but that is how I feel about this one.

Nova really is key to this pages aesthetics. Warlock and Tyro, are important for the crossover story that is Annihilation Conquest. However, since I am guessing the art teams were aware at the time that Gamora and Drax were to become the Guardians of the Galaxy, this is truly like a welcome to the team moment as they enter the story on this issue.. Otherwise, the other key pages are all interiors, which I am guessing was to not distract from the introductory DPS that opens Guardians of the Galavy (Vol. 2). Sadly those two intro pages for Vol. 2 don't have Groot on them. Therefore, as a Groot collector, the image of the team first coming together on the second to last page from this issue has more importance for me. Thankfully, now three of my pages from this issue contain them all, to include Groot, which is why I am so thankful for this page. If I were to hang them together they literally equal the other page with this being aesthetically pleasing and combining all the artists from this issue. This is like collectors getting their Grail of Grails for me when combined with my other pages.

I want just a page
'Til I'm in Kree space
They all got away, bids got buried
'Til I bid the Alves you carried

If Tyro, I'm going too, uh
'Cause it was always Groot, alright
And if I turn raccoon, please don't save me
Nothing left to lose with Dan and Andy

Drax and Gamora, we should stick together, I know
I said the Hanna inks with Alves Nova has shown
Can't change the thriller, Warlock be forever
But if with Gamora, Drax even better

And I don't know what I'm trying for
I don't think I MCU more
It might not be pause, but baby, I

I'll love to bid on page that I buy
Bid the page that I try
'Til the light leaves my lines
'Til the day that I die

Groot had me at "I am Groot!" Although so did the other Guardians of the Galaxy.

It's pause and not pause, so ya. Probably 'Til the day that I die.

I had my hands on the piece and wasn't letting go lol. For a moment I thought I had it for extreamly cheap. Then another party started putting the pressure on right at the end. Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks Miki! Love the Scott Hanna inks. The fact that they were on Wellinton Alves pencils was actually a surprise to me. I knew some of the Nova issues, not long after by Alves and Hanna, were inks on blue line. Thus, my chasing of other inkers with Alves on the Nova run. The fact that it was pencil and inks made it even more special when having it in hand.

that is a killer looking splash page dude and what a lineup of characters, perfect for your collection and a good value too for an auction win!! Major congrats and kudos!! Breaking a buying pause is certainly tough but sometimes it can be worth it as long as it makes sense to do so, which in this case it sounds like it totally did!

Wow! What a kickass splash page! Stunning work by Wellinton Alves and Scott Hanna! I love this image of Nova leading the future Guardians of the Galaxy--Gamora, Drax, Warlock and Tyro--into Kree space! Never have the Guardians looked more heroic than they look right here! Love Scott Hanna's thick, lush inks. He really knows how to make characters pop off the page! Just a killer pick-up, congratulations!
