Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) brought fine art sensibilities to the world of French advertising during the Belle Epoque of the late 19th century. He built his reputation with a series of posters depicting Sarah Bernhardt, the leading lady of Paris theatre. His posters enjoyed instant demand beyond their original use on the sides of theatres, an early example of the interface between celebrities, artists, and the secondary collectors' market. Mucha often framed Bernhardt's head in front of a circular background such as a stained glass window; see the additional image.
This painting pays homage to Mucha's Art Nouveau style, adapting his swooping curves for a representation of Marvel's First Family. Sue Storm takes center stage, her head framed in Mucha's typical circular window, adorned with the FF logo. Her pink skin tone sets off her golden hair. She also wears a heavy necklace of Art Nouveau design. A galaxy of Mucha stars floats in space, as does the hail of cosmic rays which gave the FF their powers. Sue fades to invisibility as the eye moves down the image, with her outline turning from black to white. Reed stretches in from stage right to hold his wife's hand. Ben and Johnny find subtle representation in the orange gem and red flame respectively dangling from her gloves.
Fred.Ian published several pieces in this style together in a book titled "Art Nouveau." I chose to buy this one for the subtle family focus and layout. The art measures 13.25"x20.5" on a 16.5"x22.25" sheet of tan paper, one inch shorter than a European A2 page.
