Description

"Battle of Midway" by Paul S. Newman. October-December 1963.

We are introduced to Ensign Reed, a PBY Catalina pilot stationed on Midway Island.

We learn that President Roosevelt publicly and humorously said that the Doolittle bombers came from Shangri-La, the fictional Tibetan setting of the 1933 novel place "Lost Horizon."

The Japanese conclude the Doolittle planes came from Midway and decide to take the island to prevent further raids on Tokyo and put them closer to Hawaii.

Admiral Nimitz receives code breaker transcripts of Japanese naval transmissions of the impending attack and orders that the Midway base be alerted.

The guy in the 1st panel looks like a young Jack Kirby from when he was in the war. By the way, the Japanese soldiers are obviously speaking among themselves in Japanese, yet somehow I understand everything they're saying. I never realized I understood Japanese!
