Description

WHAT IF? no. 11: “What If The Original Marvel Bullpen Had Become The Fantastic Four” (1978), story page 21

From a series known for wacky ideas, this one is about the wackiest. An idea so offbeat, only Jack Kirby could have pulled it off – another Marvel milestone from “the King.” Not only did he write and pencil it, he appears in it as the Ever-lovin’ Thing, along with

- Stan “The Man” Lee as Mr. Fantastic,

- Sol Brodsky as the Human Torch (Brodsky was the Marvel Bullpen Production Manager, and eventually VP of Operations),

- and Flo Steinberg as the Invisible Girl (she was the office secretary/receptionist and correspondence secretary).

This was the first time that comic creators were pictured in a comic book and identified as such (as opposed to appearing as inside jokes to be recognized only by other creators and hardcore fans).

This issue was actually quite a landmark, as it marked the first time Kirby had pencilled a Marvel comic since his departure in 1970, and the very last time that Kirby would draw the Fantastic Four in a Marvel comic book. He was coaxed into doing the pencils for the entire issue, and it is a treat from the cover to the end.

For other pages from this issue, see the additional images.

so completely cool! Flo found her way into so many comics I can hardly believe all the places she turned up just in my living room gallery. Maybe someday a page from this book will find its way there..

Beautiful pages from a significant issue of Kirby's career!  Best of all, these pages all came from Roz Kirby's collection and the money went to her.
