Description

15" x 10" image area. Ink and screentone over graphite on Bristol board. Dead of Night #11 Page 1 Title Splash original art (Marvel, 1975). Rico Rival. Historic first appearance of the villain Scarecrow or Straw Man.

Marvel's expansion of horror titles in the mid-1970s opened up the doors for many characters to receive their own series, including the Scarecrow in Dead of Night, although it turned out to be just a single issue as the title ended with his first issue, #11. This is Rico Rival's page 1 title splash to that Scarecrow story in #11. The first 10 issues of Dead of Night featured reprints of old Atlas-era. The 11th and final issue introduced the Scarecrow, a being with supernatural powers who emerges from a painting to battle an evil cult. Sometimes called the Straw Man, the Scarecrow would return over the decades to battle Doctor Strange and others.
