DescriptionGenerations of outstanding artists have studied the approach to figure drawing pioneered by Frank Reilly at the Art Students League in the early 20th Century. Jeff Watts carries on this tradition, and he has created my favorite life drawings of all time. Jeff is a great friend who has taught hundreds (thousands?) of artists in all aspects of traditional drawing and painting at his Atelier in the San Diego area, and he and his fellow instructors have generated an enormous trove of virtual course material. So if you want to improve your drawing and painting skills, check out his online courses and/or make a pilgrimage to his Atelier. Here's an awesome 18"x24" Frazetta Conan study Jeff did for me back in the 90s. I love how he captured the pose, anatomy, hair, movement, and lighting of the original but infused his own style and calligraphy into the piece. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

I've always been fascinated with charcoal. I actually just love the idea of it as a medium. Sadly, I haven't been exposed to enough sampling to discuss it comfortably. This seems like a great example though. The definition is striking with an effective application of tones.

This is Conan in bondage as the muscle tension indicates the struggle. Most likely a beast has appeared in front of him that can devour or turn him into ash and soot.

This one reminds me of the great Friday night live stream he did doing small master copy paintings in gouache. One of them was a Frazetta Coanan head. Amazing how he was able to copy and emulate JC lindecker or Frazetta or Dean Cornwall or Wyeth. He is bouched around styles with ease, just like in this piece. It really shows off how well he understands anatomy and can render the human form. Cool piece.
