And so it began. The divide had secretly formed. MODOK and Coda spent less-and-less time, quality time, together. For Coda, loneliness was beginning to set in, “I’m in a foreign country, eating foreign food, watching foreign games, with just one friend that helped keep things together by a thread. And then, one day, BAM…it’s like we don’t even know one another.” Coda began squawking early in the morning, a primal scream meant to call out to those of his kind. And though the call could never be returned, Coda was relentless, even ruthless. MODOK explains, “That thing woke me up every morning, like clockwork! I’d come upstairs, and he’d always have that same damn blank look on his face. If there hadn’t been coffee made, he would have been dead the first morning.”
