Description

Continuing with my recent CAF posts of Big Two superhero covers (Bill is so patient with me...), here is a deftly executed oil painting of roses, grapes, and a teacup by Daniel Keys, who is my favorite living still life artist. He paints tableaux from life with no preparation, going directly to the canvas with oils and completing a finished painting in one sitting, typically. Really nice guy, too. He first studied from books by Richard Schmid and later became a compatriot and painting companion with Mr. Schmid towards the end of his life.

This piece is pure magic. Lush, vibrant, and bursting with life! His ability to capture light and texture with such effortless brushwork is just unreal. The way the rich reds of the roses contrast with the deep purples of the grapes, all anchored by that beautifully painted teacup, makes this a really standout piece.

Great use of the pastels to make this still life convey the many things to affect the senses. The natural textures and softness in the rose petals act in contrast to the smooth porcelain and het of the tea within that brings out the a robust fragance and taste.
