Description

This is master artist Gabriele Dell'otto's painted variant cover to Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 (2023), published by Dynamite. The artwork is executed in conte crayon detailed with white ink. Maleficent, who is known for her visually impressive satanic horns, was introduced as the villainess in Disney's 1959 animated feature film, Sleeping Beauty. She is a malevolent fairy who curses young Princess Aurora to die by pricking her finger on a spindle after not being invited to Aurora's christening. The curse results in Aurora falling into a long-term deep sleep. A live-action version of Maleficent, played to perfection by Angelina Jolie, was introduced in her own film, Maleficent in 2014 and a sequel was released in 2019. Sleeping Beauty is based on a folk tale first published in 1528.

It's like the the great concept drawings and paintings done by Disney legends before the original animated movie began production that would inform the team of the mood and character of the subject. You can feel the evil flow through her!

Dell'Otto is so good, and this is great subject material for his artistic approach.
