Description

Here is a bronze age page by the King. I like Mike's inks on Kirby because he did great blacks and was very true to the pencils with less of his own personality added to the work. Sinnot and Everett would be my favorite of Kirby's inkers but Royer was a favorite in this era.

This page was the third piece in a bigger trade deal. It was added to even out balance between values on the bigger items to make the whole thing come together. It is nice get a Kirby as a throw in on a deal!

It is a pretty great page with Kirby getting the writing credits in addition to pencils. The description from marvel.fandom.com is below and this page has 3 panels devoted to both subplots. There is Kirby krackle, action lines and sound effects that bring this page to life. From what I recall this ties in with the story in the Marvel movie but I will leave that to the experts, I only saw the movie once when it first came out.

Plot description for this issue:

T'Challa is on his way back to Wakanda to stop the revolution perpetuated by his half-brother, Jakarra. Along his flight path, he notices two men swimming away from a capsized boat. He rescues the men and takes them on board. Moments later, he discovers that one of them is Nicky Scarpo, a gangster from the United States. Nicky and his henchman, Herman, attempt to seize control of the Panther's plane, but T'Challa sends it into a tailspin throwing the gangsters off their feet. One of them fires a bullet, which inadvertently ruptures a fuel line. The airplane crashes just off the African coast. Nicky Scarpo is rendered unconscious and his lieutenant dies in the crash. The Black Panther pulls him away from the wreckage.

Meanwhile in Wakanda, Jakarra has mutated into a large, hideous monster as a result of exposure to radiation from the Vibranium mound. He cuts a bloody swathe of destruction until he reaches the royal chambers of Wakanda's presiding government council. T'Challa's family has arrived to lend aid to acting regent, N'Gassi. Jakarra tries to kill them, but the Wakanda security forces arrive and drives him off.

Kirby in the 70's was even bolder in style and blockiness.  Royer is a favorite for being faithful to the King's vision to make the shadows more rich for the gravitas of the story and expand upon the emotional appeal.

An electrifying page in the classic six panel grid layout! Kirby’s dynamic storytelling is on full display here, with bold compositions, intense expressions, and powerful action. Whether it’s T’Challa’s determined resolve in the upper tier, the incoming threat, or the chaos erupting among the Wakandans, the way Kirby builds tension from panel to panel is SO good. I LOVE Royer’s inks here. They bring out all the depth and weight in the figures, making this a prime example of peak Bronze Age storytelling. Whether you keep it or part with it, the ultimate owner will have a lot to appreciate with this fantastic page!

a lot of Kirby's signature elements here to make for a great bronze age era example from his dual writer/artist period at Marvel. To have a great Kirby example thrown into a multiple piece trade as a sweetener certainly sounds like a good day in the hobby. congrats!

Each panel is filled to the edges with the details that made Kirby's 1970s art distinctive and rich. I enjoyed it as a kid, but as an adult, I can enjoy it in a way that exceeds mere nostalgia. (Oh, and yes, cheers to Mike Royer's inking and his instinctive understanding of how Kirby's art during this period should be presented.)
