Description

Make Mine Music "The Martins and Coys - Automotive Wash Job" Calendar Illustration by Bill Layne Original Art (Walt Disney/Brown & Bigelow, 1957). Gran'pa and the family are washing their rattletrap car in the creek, while ravishing blonde Grace Martin bathes behind a rock - watch that fishin' line, Junior! This and other paintings were inspired by the Disney film Make Mine Music, but these aren't quite the same Coys and Martins. In the original film segment, the only Coy with yellow hair was Henry, the sole surviving member of the family (after a gun battle, the feuding families nearly wiped each other out), and his love interest Grace was a redhead. Disney artist Bill Layne (1911 - 2005) took liberties aplenty with his series of calendar paintings featuring the hillbilly families, but what th' heck, it makes for a fun stereotype hillbilly image, one of Layne's specialties. During his years at the Disney studio, Bill worked as an animator on such films as Sleeping Beauty, The Sword in the Stone, Mary Poppins, and The Jungle Book. This gouache on board illustration is matted with an opening of 12.5" x 10", and framed with glass for an overall size of 19.25" x 17.25".

A lovely piece with a playful premise. Disney's vision of Americana is what they thought Americans in urban centers would be nostalgic for even if it's making fun of them/ourselves.
