Description
I’ve been eyeing this nice piece by Belgian artist Jean-Leon Huens for a while and finally decided to pull the trigger. This was created as the cover art for numerous publications of Robert Nye’s 1968 book “Beowulf: A New Telling.” Huens was a prominent illustrator, primarily in the areas of children's books, fantasy art and magazines. He is a 2002 inductee into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. In the fantasy realm, he’s best known for creating cover art for Lloyd Alexander’s “The Prydain Chronicles.”

It's pretty awesome with the prince on his white horse encountering a bunch of bones that lead you to realize who did it in the foreground.  Every inch of ths painting has a texture to it showing how masterful Huens was in the story and worldbuilding.  I wouldn't even be surprised if this is the kind of ogre fantasy work Shrek would make reference to.
