Description
Wolverine # 4 (1988) page 5
Art by John Buscema & Al Williamson
Marvel Comics - October 1988

This was my big pick up at Heroes Con this year from fellow CAFer, Chuck Arnold! I have to start by sending a thank you to Chuck for parting with this piece and to Andre for helping me get this signed by writer Chris Claremont on Sunday, June 22, 2025!

The Buscema/Claremont Marvel Comics Presents and Wolverine stories hold a lot of nostalgia for me and it's always a thrill to be able to see the originals in person. Al Williamson inked a few issues and I'm happy to finally add a page with his inks.

This one is from issue 4, which introduced us to Wolverine's pilot, Archie. This was his very first panel, and we quickly learn it's not easy being Logan's/Patch's friend and pilot. This was also our introduction to the unsavory Bloodsport and Roughouse. These characters played a big role in the next few issues and have popped up from time to time over the decades since.

I recently re-read these issues and I noticed that Buscema used smoke-rings as an artistic theme in several issues (check out the additional images). It was such a great way to slow things down and control the pace of the story. I'm happy to own one of his "smoke ring" pages.

Nice page with 3 uniquely different stylistic shots of Wolvie in the first 3 panels. Williamson inks over Buscema look great! congrats George!

Buscema Wolverine smoke rings.  Be careful you don't give someone an idea for a gallery theme.  Haha!  But it would be a cool one though, and pretty damn unique.  That said, cool page.  I could care less about all the 1st appearances, but love the Buscema/Williamson collab.  At this point they were two, grizzled, old, comic vets.  But their mastery of the craft shows in every panel here.

Ooooo this is a great one, I'm not sure why but these pages like this always get that good nostalgia - he was a natural artist for the more gritty Logan
