Description
Published 1987

Tyroc first appeared in Superboy #216 (April 1976), and was created by Cary Bates and Mike Grell.

Tyroc was the first black super-hero in the Legion of Super-Heroes comic. Previously both Jim Shooter and Mike Grell were prevented from introducing black characters in the Legion.

Tyroc is a metahuman with reality-warping screams that possess various effects. He can create dimensional portals and force fields, transmute matter, generate fire and wind, telekinetically manipulate objects, manipulate weather and plants, induce vertigo, and view the past.
Tyroc is a resident of Marzal, an island which usually exists in another dimension and occasionally appears on Earth. Its people are descended from African slaves who revolted while being transported to North America in the 1700s and developed an advanced civilization with extreme isolationist tendencies.
Grell has repeatedly said, although finally introducing a black character in the Legion, he was unhappy with the character's background and powers. So much so that he gave the character what he felt was a ridiculous costume and was amazed when it was accepted by editorial.

DC really missed out on a fine idea. The Adventures of Tyroc and Vartox. Can you dig it?

So odd to see Breyfogle doing a Legion character. Have you ever noticed that the inking on this piece resembles that of Tom Mandrake's, but not quite as heavy?

Thanks for that profile. I was always disappointed that DC's rollout of its nonwhite characters showed more about those doing the rollout than the characters – a little less vision than Marvel. Gotta say, though, that Breyfogel makes the character look as intriguing as I've ever seen him.
