Marilyn

My third pencil piece post in a row. The streak is by no means intentional, but just a fun coincidence. This is another drawing I picked up from Mr. Martin’s site sale last summer (I think he just had another site wide sale, but I didn’t pick anything up this time). While it’s always nice to not pay full price, the only downside was that the art wasn’t packaged very well and arrived slightly bent (I guess I picked a bad time to buy multiple pieces, LOL). The good news is that I was eventually able to flatten out the damage. Of the two, the crease on this Marilyn was much less visible. So it required less repair.

James always does an amazing job on his drawings and I’ve been a fan for a while. I especially enjoy his celebrity portraits. A good portion of his work is more erotically themed. But while I don’t particularly have anything against cheesecake or nudity, I just don’t find those works to be as appealing or as interesting. Which is not to say that I dislike them. On the contrary. Most are quite stunning. Just stating a preference, that’s all. But again, this is not to say that I won’t end up with one (or two) at some point. Especially if he keeps having those website sales. Haha!

About the art. For those who don’t know, I am a HUGE Marilyn fan. At this point, I don’t think I have enough MM pieces to warrant a dedicated gallery. But nothing would make me happier than to have an entire room of Marilyn pieces. I just don’t pick them up that frequently because I’m rather picky about how they look (or how SHE looks). In this case, James really outdoes himself. This is such a beautiful pencil rendering. I love the work on her hair and especially her face. The light and shadow, the shading and tonal work, the cross hatch, the figure work, and of course the uncanny likeness, are all masterfully executed. It truly is a stunning portrait of this silver screen goddess and icon. If I could find more pieces like this, I’d have a full Marilyn gallery in no time. But I’d probably also be broke, so I guess we’ll just stick to this pace. Haha!
