Dampyr #69 (2006) pages 69-70: I killed them for my country

Erwin Rogers is about to kidnap young Diego Guerrero, but a memory gives him pause, and Diego runs home:

(mom Francisca) “He's not answering me! I'm going to look for him.”

(Harlan) “Wait. I'll go.”

“Mom! Mom!”

“Diego!”

(Erwin recalls a scene from his own childhood) “If it were necessary, would you die to save me, Dad?”

“What strange thoughts you have in your head, my child. Of course I would. I feel responsible for you. You know that.”

“Does that mean you love me?”

“Of course. Of course I love you. You will never be in danger, I assure you. I will protect you.”

“When I grow up, I want to be like you, Dad. I want to carry a gun too... and kill the bad guys!”

(Dad on his deathbed) “My country is Chile now. What I did... I did it for my country.”

“It was your duty, dad.”

(Erwin drives away, thinking about his own reluctance to kidnap a child.) “Duty is duty. But you can always choose the way. I'll find a fairer way.”

(Harlan) “Blond, blue eyes... This could be the first description we have of the killer.”

(Baldwyn)“But why did he let the child see him?”

“He wanted to scare the Guerreros.”

“I still don't understand why?”

“We'll explain later. Right now, I suggest you pack your bags and come with us.”

The intravenous line in the upper right panel is proximal to the wrist. It ought to be on the back of the hand, but it would have been obscured by teen Erwin’s hand if it were there.
