DescriptionBob Davis had a short career as an artist, but the character Dick Cole that he created lasted quite a while. Davis was hired by Funnies Inc in late 1939 and began his career as a writer starting with Marvel Mystery Comics #4 on the feature Ferret, Mystery Detective. He created the character of Dick Cole, writing and illustrating the first appearance in Blue Bolt V1 #1, with a cover date of June, 1940. Davis, according to a short bio in Jerry Bails' Who's Who, died in late November, 1941, at the age of 31. But Dick Cole survived the war and into the 1950's as a sports star in the mold of Jack Armstrong and similar characters.Along the way Dick Cole had a few notable cover artists, including Bill Everett and L.B. Cole, but this cover design by Davis was very evocative of the nature of the times it was drawn and the patriotism displayed in the comics generally just prior to the entry of the U.S. into the fray of World War 2. All the macho stuff glorifying and prepping young boys to enlist to serve! Although that mid air leap is kind of girly ballet. The rest of it is patriotic kick butt action.

Scotty - really nice pick up - wonderful piece and harkens back to simpler times (or so we all thought).

I might have been the bidder below you. I always loved Blue Bolt, and I think this is a special piece. Congratulations on adding it to your collection.
