Jimmy Swinnerton (1875-1974) is enjoying a well-deserved resurgence these days, helped mightily by Pete Maresca’s wonderful and recent book, “Jimmy! The Comic Art of James Swinnerton”. Swinnerton’s Little Jimmy ran for over 50 years, from 1904 to 1958. In the 1940s and 50s, Swinnerton would send Sunday roughs to King Features via Air Mail. I’ve never been able to determine if he was doing these for approval or for ghosts like Doc Winner to draw the finishes. I suspect it is the latter. In any event, these Swinnerton roughs are fairly scarce and offer a rare opportunity to peek behind the scenes at how he created his strips. This is a Little Jimmy Sunday rough for the page from June 9, 1946. You can see where Swin gave indications as to where the characters would be, filling in some dialogue as he went along. This one features a cute seal at the end! The piece is not signed, though it’s clearly labeled on the reverse, and is accompanied by Swinnerton’s King Features paystub! That’s not something you see every day! The piece was drawn on a thin stock art paper, with two mailing folds. There is a tiny hole in the center, where the creases meet, though it is in a blank space. This will be shipped flat, unfolded. The artwork measures 17”x 11”. Rare stuff. $100.00 + 16.00 shipping.
