DescriptionDave Breger (1908-1970) was one of the most popular cartoonists during WWII, on par with the great Bill Mauldin. Breger created his Private Breger cartoons in the pages of the Saturday Evening Post in 1942. The army saw the talent they had on its hands, so Breger changed the name of his character to GI Joe in 1942, with GI being the standard term for “Government Issue”. GI Joe appeared in the very first issue of Yank in the June 17, 1942 issue. But Breger wasn’t done yet. His GI Joe also appeared in the pages of Stars and Stripes, and beginning on October 19, 1942, Breger started drawing a daily panel, Private Breger Abroad, for King Features. The panel ran under that title for nearly three years, until October 13, 1945, before it was retitled as Mister Breger. That feature ran until Breger’s death in 1970. It may be fair to say that Dave Breger was the hardest working cartoonist during WWII.While Breger’s Mister Breger panels are not uncommon, his WWII work particularly Private Breger Abroad, are more difficult to find. Since the feature ran for only three years, originals do not show up very often. I’m very pleased to offer an example from March 21, 1944. The panel features Private Breger laying in his tent, within a castle, writing to his family be candlelight: “Dear Folks – You’ll be proud to hear I’m living in a real old twelfth century English castle…” The drawing in the piece is terrific, featuring a wonderful use of perspective and contour line work. There is light blue watercolor throughout, except for the candlelight, as an indication as to where the shading tape would be laid. You can see some glue staining present from the shading tape, unfortunately common in WWII-era pieces. The panel measures 9”x 8¼”, and outside of the light glue staining, is in solid Fine condition. $125.00 + 9.00 first class shipping. Social/Sharing |
