Description

John T. McCutcheon (1870-1949), considered one of the truly great editorial cartoonists of the 20th century, was a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, known as the "Dean of American Cartoonists". McCutcheon came from a long line of Hoosier cartoonists, including folks like Gaar Williams and Kin Hubbard. McCutcheon was a mainstay at the Chicago Tribune, usually featured above the fold on the front page, a rare honor. In fact, this editorial cartoon I’m offering was given that very place of honor! Twice in fact! Titled “When the Relief Experts Take Up Farm Relief in Real Earnest”, the cartoon first appeared in at the Chicago Tribune on July 27, 1928. The cartoon was so good that the Trib used it again on the front page eight years later, on July 17, 1936. The cartoon features Tammany Farmers as “relief experts”, taking everything they pass as they drive through the farmland. The Tammany Tiger runs behind the car filled with the famers. The drawing is packed with figures and livestock, yet McCutcheon manages to keep everything clear and readable, all done with a marvelous cartooning approach. But wait! There’s more! McCutcheon gifted the cartoon to his cartoonist pal H.T. Webster, with the following inscription: “To “Webby”, With the affectionate good wishes of his friend, John T. McCutcheon. Sept. 5, 1946”. It’s a wonderful association piece between two giants in the field. The cartoon measures 21”x 14¼” cartoon is in solid Fine condition, with typical age toning and one small scratched out area in the center of the upper border. All in all, a tremendous example of McCutcheon’s work, with a great association. $200.00 + 20.00 Priority Mail shipping.
