In 2006, Mike Luckovich won the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, marking a significant milestone in his career. This was his first time receiving the overall Reuben Award, though he had previously won the Reuben Award for Editorial Cartooning in 2001. That same year, he also won his second Pulitzer Prize, further cementing his reputation as one of the most influential editorial cartoonists.
The Reuben Awards were presented during a black-tie event on May 27, 2006, in Chicago, Illinois, as part of the 60th Annual Reuben Awards Weekend. Luckovich was selected from a group of nominees that included Bill Amend (FoxTrot), Dave Coverly (Speed Bump), Brian Crane (Pickles), and Dan Piraro (Bizarro). The award itself is named after Rube Goldberg, the first president of the National Cartoonists Society (NCS), and is considered the highest honor in professional cartooning.
