I absolutely love the quality of the figure work on this cover, especially the machine gunner in the foreground. His pose feels incredibly dynamic and grounded, with excellent foreshortening. The folds of his uniform, and the reflective goggles are rendered beautifully, adding so much realism and texture.
The lighting and inking choices draw the eye directly to him, establishing him as the focal point despite the fact that our heroes are centered in the background. The Nazi soldiers backed up against the wall add a weight and sense of overwhelming dread and suspense to the scene. These are just some of the elements that made Kubert's art so strong for so many decades and why I love his work so much. Overall, to me at least, it’s a masterful example of dynamic storytelling through figure drawing. Congratulations on adding such a fine example to your collection, Peter!
Thank you, Rubén! Excellent comments and thorough analysis! Well said!
These guys may be "The Losers" but this cover says nothing but "Winner"
Huge congrats!!
Beautiful cover! You can almost smell the machine gun oil and death in the air...Kubert was amazing!
25 well spent cents
Great example of the mid 70's war cover! Kubert has the crux of the story distilled onto the cover. You know it when you read the story and find this exact scene.
Very cool!
The Losers were cool - sweet example!
Sockamagee!
A fantastic Kubert cover. Huge congrats on adding this one Peter!
Superb. Colour me jealous. 😜
Fantastic cover. What a wonderful addition to an already stellar collection of art centered around true heroes.
So many lines to guide the eye. Very, very nice cover.
Yes! Excellent observation! Thank you, Mark! Kubert was a master of designing his art to make lines that guide the eye. In this case, the three sets of figures are the ends of a triangle. My eye sees the black roofs and Losers form an arrow pointing to the machine gun. The machine gun's horizontal line instantly draws my eye to the gunner and then just as quiclkly the two of them as a single image. Of course, the machine gunner also draws the eye to the Nazis lurking in the shadows.
