Description
"Ivan" by Jack Kirby, October 1975.

Ivan, the story's principal villain and machine gunner, is a Russian member of an SS foreign unit that wears fez-like soft hats and uniforms distinct from those of their German counterparts.

GCD story summary: The Losers, undercover as SS agents in Russia, encounter a mother and a son who promise passes to those sought by the Nazis, but instead turn them over to the authorities to be executed. Disgusted, the Losers turn the tables on the son and set him up to be executed just like his victims.

Cover is 12 x 17.5

I absolutely love the quality of the figure work on this cover, especially the machine gunner in the foreground. His pose feels incredibly dynamic and grounded, with excellent foreshortening. The folds of his uniform, and the reflective goggles are rendered beautifully, adding so much realism and texture.

The lighting and inking choices draw the eye directly to him, establishing him as the focal point despite the fact that our heroes are centered in the background. The Nazi soldiers backed up against the wall add a weight and sense of overwhelming dread and suspense to the scene. These are just some of the elements that made Kubert's art so strong for so many decades and why I love his work so much. Overall, to me at least, it’s a masterful example of dynamic storytelling through figure drawing. Congratulations on adding such a fine example to your collection, Peter!

Great example of the mid 70's war cover!  Kubert has the crux of the story distilled onto the cover.  You know it when you read the story and find this exact scene.

Yes! Excellent observation! Thank you, Mark! Kubert was a master of designing his art to make lines that guide the eye. In this case, the three sets of figures are the ends of a triangle. My eye sees the black roofs and Losers form an arrow pointing to the machine gun. The machine gun's horizontal line instantly draws my eye to the gunner and then just as quiclkly the two of them as a single image. Of course, the machine gunner also draws the eye to the Nazis lurking in the shadows.
