Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Few films validate the entire concept of remakes better than this one, expanding on the 1956 Don Siegel cult-classic, and then some. The feeling of paranoia creeps in almost from the very first frame (with an uncredited Robert Duvall as a silent priest sitting on a swing), and then slowly coils tighter and tighter until only terror remains. One of the best science fiction, horror films ever made, it offers a strong critique of consumerism and a breakdown in societal norms that resonates even today. (Directed by Philip Kaufman)
