Description

"Out the Gate" by Paul S. Newman. October-December 1963.

Lt. Nesco explains that he can impersonate a Romanian officer who is part of the foreign delegation that visits the camp.

The escape committee laughs but approves the plan.

The tailor makes a uniform made of blankets that they think looks Romanian, and the forger provides fake papers with impressive-looking seals from the German High Command.

He's counting on Germans not being familiar with Romanian uniforms.

When the dignitaries arrive, however, they are all Italians, making it impossible for him to disappear into the group.

He waits until the Italians are at lunch and the next shift relieves the gate guards.

As he approaches the gate the guard orders him to halt.

Sounds like a crazy plan to me, but then, being a prisoner in a concentration camp would likely make one willing to take some risk if it meant getting out. Fyi, Peter, just like the previous story, did you notice that the splash page was tightly inked while this page is noticeably looser? Must've been a deadline issue, especially given how many pages he drew in this issue.

Excellent observation about the inking, Rubén! Sam drew all of the interiors during the book's 40-issue run (1961-73)! Fortunately for his work load and unfortunately for money, the book wasn't monthly. It ran every two months and later quarterly, with a few exceptions. He also got work in other Dell and Charlton books, mostly war and some jungle. His DC work first appeared in 1970.

I like that Glanzman is able to get so many faces of ethnicity in there.  Nesco has a bold plan.  One that could have only come from the cool hand of Paul Newman.

Adjusting a plan on the fly in this scenario is nerve wracking! Another nice page of art though and I love love a solid 6-panel layout.
