STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Mixed-Media Final Newspaper Ad Slick Artwork

A mixed media photo print in the style of posterist Tom Jung hand-embellished for newspaper ad slicks promoting George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. Ad slicks were black and white advertisement pages that were sent to newspapers and had advertisements of varying sizes printed on them, which were then cut and added into the master printing files. This enhanced-contrast version of the original artwork from the one-sheet was run in many newspapers advertising the film and showtimes, and is a unique part of the history of its advertising campaign.

This black-and-white print features Jung's signed artwork of the Death Star, Rebel fleet, and core cast with hand-painted highlights around Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) lightsaber, droids C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) added to enhance the contrast of the print for better reproduction quality in newsprint. This ad slick introduced variances from the original Tom Jung artwork that can be seen in newspaper ads of the era. The print is missing text elements, including the title and tagline, which were intended to be added later. It is backed with white matte board that exhibits denting on its reverse.
