Description

John McCutcheon (1870-1949), the “Dean of American Cartoonists”, turned 70 in 1940, and was honored by the Indiana Society of Chicago at it’s 29th annual dinner on December 14, 1940. As part of this honor, the Indiana Society of Chicago produced this wonderful 48-page, velo-bound book, containing tributes by many of McCutcheon’s colleagues. The cover features a terrific cartoon by Paul Plaschke, depicting McCutcheon surrounded by his colleagues. The interior contains a Who’s Who of comic strip luminaries, including Milton Caniff, H.T. Webster, Frank King, Harold Gray, Daniel Fitzpatrick, Ding Darling, Chester Gould and many, many more. All of these contributions are full-page pieces done specially for this book. The book is not common at all, which is not surprising. I can’t imagine that many copies were printed, since they were intended for this celebratory dinner. The book measures 11”x 8½” and is in solid Fine condition. There is one small bit of schmutz on the title paper and two tiny areas of bug damage on the front cover. All else is quite good.
