DescriptionChon Day (1907-2000) was one of those understated cartoonists whose gentle style sometimes belied a biting wit. Day worked for most of the major publications, including the New Yorker, the Saturday Evening Post, and Look. A cartoonist of the less-is-more school, Day's use of ink wash (and blue wash for Zip-a-Tone), supported his beautifully simplified line work perfectly. Considered a master of the to-the-point punchline, Day rarely went for the jugular, preferring more gentle, observational humor. But not always. His most well-known character, Brother Sebastian, was created in the pages of Look in 1954. I’m pleased to present what I consider a subtly brilliant piece by Day, a cartoon that appeared in Lobby magazine. A husband and wife are driving, when the woman asks, “How would you like a carbon and valve job for your birthday?” There is something about innocence of the gag, with a slight undertone of a sexual connotation. There is not a wasted line in the cartoon, supported by some light blue ink wash. Truly wonderful stuff. Measuring 11”x 8˝”, the cartoon is in Fine+ condition. $85.00 + 9.00 first class shipping. Day remains an underrated great as far as I’m concerned, and one of the true bargains in comic art.Social/Sharing |
