DescriptionWWII Cartoon Sketchbook & Postwar CareerMaster Sergeant Ralph Duzan Pollard (19111992) Medium: Pencil on paper, WWII sketchbook page Size (approx.): 11" Χ 14" scrapbook sheet (individual drawings ~4.5" Χ 6") Provenance: Estate archive, World War History & Art Museum (Alliance, Ohio). Artist Background: Ralph D. Pollard was a trained commercial artist (University of Cincinnati, Class of 1934) who served as a Master Sergeant during WWII. His sketchbook captures the humor, frustrations, and self-deprecating wit of daily life in the European Theater of Operations. Cartoon Analysis Page 2 Cartoon 3 (Top): "Medical Quota" Scene: A medic speaks to Pollard, who has bandaged himself. Caption: I see the blood, Sergeant, and Im sorry you cut yourself again, but we have orders from Division Headquarters no more than one Purple Heart a month. Meaning: Pollard mocks his own tendency to exaggerate injuries, suggesting he might be collecting Purple Hearts as though they were monthly rations. Commentary: A sharp satire on both military bureaucracy and the GI habit of embellishing wounds, this cartoon balances gallows humor with an insiders wink at the absurdities of war recognition. Cartoon 4 (Bottom): "The Fence" Scene: Two soldiers labor near an obstacle as Pollard, pipe in mouth, slams into a barbed-wire fence. Caption: I said when the hell did they build that fence? Meaning: Highlights the disorientation and ever-present danger of battlefield terrain, while poking fun at Pollard himself for blundering into obstacles. Commentary: A classic example of Pollards self-deprecation, reinforcing the running theme that even NCOs could stumble, bluster, and become the butt of their own jokes. 📖 Reference: For Pollards education, wartime service, and postwar career as Art Director at Procter & Gamble, see the Books & Ephemera Gallery biography.
