Cartoon 1 (Top)

Caption: “Frankly, Sergeant, you’ll continue to have that trouble with your back as long as you keep weighing yourself down with those medals.”

Analysis:
Pollard satirizes his own ambition and the Army’s fixation with honors. The Master Sergeant’s chest full of medals literally bends his back, a visual gag that pokes fun at how recognition can become a burden. It’s both self-deprecation and sly commentary on military culture — how men were sometimes more concerned with stripes and medals than survival.

Cartoon 2 (Bottom)

Caption: “Sgt. Pollard, the artist, really enjoys this… in the fields and woods with the birds and creatures…”
Response: “Yeah, he’s our nature boy until it gets hot or rains or…”

Analysis:
Here, Pollard exaggerates his own quirks by showing himself playing a flute in the middle of a combat zone, serenading the countryside like an eccentric naturalist. His buddies undercut the moment with dry realism: such “nature boy” behavior doesn’t last long under the harshness of war. The contrast between artistic sensitivity and battlefield pragmatism creates the humor. It also echoes Pollard’s dual identity — soldier and artist — which carried into his postwar career as a professional creative in advertising.
