Description
Steve McGarry - PopShots - likely published in the late 80’s in the Daily Star, a UK Publication and this was a special color insert that Steve would do for the bigger Sunday Issues.

Steve McGarry is known for his music and pop culture icon biographies called BIOGRAPHICS, BIOGRAPHY, and THE DIARY OF ROCK & POP that he did for various UK publications in the 80’s and 90’s.

This weekly pop culture and music strip art focused on BRUNO (Bruce Willis) with mentioning of his debut album - THE RETURN OF BRUNO - RESPECT YOURSELF (1987). It is a direct image of Bruce Willis’s album cover. This is what drew my partner to get this piece as a gift, since he knew of my affinity for Bruce Willis. Then you see David Soul, Kojak (Telly Savalas) and Edd Byrnes (editorial note, looks like his name was only spelled with one “D” in the strip and should be two). All these quips are referencing actors that have had some musical hits with some massive sales. I especially love that I now have Bruce Willis original art to enjoy and share. It might even be some of the earliest art existing of Bruno/Bruce Willis.

Please correct me if anyone has additional or alternate info, this was a birthday gift from my partner (purchased directly from Steve McGarry at SDCC 2025) and subject material out of my wheelhouse.

Yes, these are very popular every year at the NCS booth as McGarry debuts and makes them available there.  He chooses the grouping that would have appeal to different decades of the past.  Willis is headlining for GenX appeal as the most modern and the biggest star of the group.  Looks like he's going to sell us some Seagram's wine coolers.

Thanks for that fun link that will ideally always be linked to this art.  Great to revisit BW in his prime, if I can find a Seagram's I might just partake.

Very cool find especially for a Bruce Willis fan! congrats on the gift. Sad about what happened with Bruce and his dementia in recent years though. There was just an interview with his wife on the ABC World News last night about it actually.

This is a fantastic, example of McGarry's work, especially his stippling technique! The colors are also fantastic, consisting of Dr. Martin’s dyes (the same product American comic book colorists used before computers), airbrush and a bit of white paint for highlights. Congrats on a great gift!

Fyi, PopShots was actually a precursor to The Diary of Rock & Pop in The Star. McGarry did a few weeklies, but when he learned that a slot for a daily strip was opening up on the strips page, he pitched The Diary of Rock & Pop and he abandoned PopShots.

Love that info, especially that it was the precursor to the strip he was much more known for.  Cheers!
