DescriptionMel posted this piece to his Instagram shortly before NYCC '25, and I have been eyeing it ever since. I made a dash to his table on Thursday of the 'con to snatch it up. In recent years, all the Scott/Jean art was gone in minute one, so I didn't spare any time. Mel was incredibly kind as I thumbed through his portfolio looking for this one and only. I got pretty distracted because Mel was so sweet about my cosplay and even asked for a photo. Once I got to Phoenix in the book, he let me know a commissioner was deciding between her and a couple of his other pieces. He asked me to check back later. I came back on Saturday in a different cosplay, and Mel knew it was me right away, which was impressive. We chatted again and took another photo; he's really, really sweet. Phoenix was still there, and I was so happy to grab this piece.I love that Mel blends his animated and comic styles while also giving the ladies more realistic curvy body types. I was drawn to this piece because Phoenix is typically shown with her powers in full force, flames, the phoenix bursting forth, and this piece was the opposite. It's an intimate moment, a real moment, demure even. I love the pout and the closed eyes. Her bright red hair is also a nice contrast to the green and gold. Overall, a strong statement piece that speaks volumes while appearing very soft and quiet. Social/Sharing |

The object of desire for Cyclops and Cyclops fans. I wonder if he actually sees Jean as a redhead if everything he sees is through a ruby quartz lens.

While he may see most things through his visor I know he can see Jean in his minds eye perfectly so I think he sees her as a redhead. He also sees Emma as a blonde.

You totally need to. He jumped up from his table and walked all the way around a few others to come out and hang when we saw him the two times during the con. He stated he normally doesnt bring a lot of OA with him, but his portfolio was ransacked by Day 3. I think he successfully managed to let go of a lot of art. I would love some more pieces by him.

Great NYCC/convention story, the piece ended up with the right collector after all. I like Mel's interpretation of Phoenix, how he plays with various line weights in her costume and even that scratchy/graphic effect he works into the background not to mention a more realistic figure of a strong woman in general. Nice pickup and congrats!

Kavi, I always appreciate your kind words. It warms my heart that you think this fits so well with my collection. I love making good convention stories too. The CAF+ meet up was great too! I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment too. The various line weights give it a sketch like quality which is reinforced by the dry brushed background. It all feels like something youd find in a gestural warmup or exercise. This is further reinforced by the watercolors and how theres various depths and weights to the color. Thank you.
