Everything is so appropriately done with textures of aged windswept decay for the whole environment. Stone, mortar, and even the rust and pitting of the wrought iron gates feels drained of life as it contrasts against the lively lady of the manor.
Well put--he really pulled out all the stops to create a beautifully rendered atmosphere of ruin. And this is one of the best portraits I've seen in the genre--she's as haunted as the landscape.
