Dampyr #105 (2008) pages 19-20: Memorial Day

For Memorial Day, a post about a fallen comrade: Harlan and Nik return to the Green Eagle tavern, where the spoks digest the news of Casanova's sacrifice to save Harlan:

“Giacomo Casanova… is he gone forever? For eternity?”

“Not him! Not him!”

“Poor Bozena. You had a weakness for that handsome Venetian knight.”

“Like all females, whether they're flesh and blood or not, dear Rysanek.”

“I shudder to think that what happened to him could happen to us too, dear Shegl.”

(Harlan) “Your ghostly friends seem to be in turmoil, Nik.”

“Their existence in the shadows has always been timeless and uneventful… repetitive and circular. But, faced with the threat of total annihilation, it almost seems as if they've received a shock, a murder of true existence. Interesting.”

“We can't leave our friend unavenged, Nikolaus.”

“I thought you didn't like him, Karl.”

“The Venetian was a braggart. I confess I always envied his amorous conquests. Whether real or fake, it doesn't matter. He lived…and I didn't. But he was heroic, a true cavalier. I want to do something, Nikolaus. All the spoks in Prague want to get in on the action.”

“Your short life was heroic too, Karl. Poor poet, who died of tuberculosis at eighteen. Do you really want to do something? And you too?”

“Put us to the test, Nikolaus. We want to fight against your enemies. All together.”

“For Giacomo!”

The first panel shows Nik navigating the "Devil's Stream," an artificial canal separating Kampa Island from the shore of the Vltava River. Nik lives on the bank of the canal as well.
