Description
Published 1996
Earthfall
written by Mark Gruenwald

The StarMasters Team is formed:
Quasar, Silver Surfer, Morfex, Xenith and Beta Ray Bill.
(Dare I say it is the birth page of the Starmasters?)

I had offered this up for Comic Art Live but I was hoping not to sell it.
And now it goes back into my permanent collection.
I had bought this without having actually read the comic but just liked the page.
When I read the comic, I discovered they had expanded the large panel into a splash
I asked Scot Eaton about this, he says he doesn't recall but looking at the drawing versus the published page:
It looks like editorial removed the top two tiers and placed that dialogue in the splash page (originally the big final panel). I think script-wise that conversation all took place in the panels because I left no room for dialogue in the last shot. It was not redrawn, I can tell based on a lot of things. Someone in the bullpen was probably asked to add the feet, finish Beta Ray Bill's cape and their feet. After the inks, so, yes; a stat and a patch!
You can also tell it must have been patched because I would never have varied the thickness of Surfer's board nor put those little heels on Bill's boots, much less the pointed toes.

Bring for fans, take on promise
Take the art, bring it home
Take a long hard look at Scot Eaton
Show pencil under Almond

See the style, young and 90's
Growing wild, offered once
And they'll try reaching for Almond
Team was born under Eaton

Swollen men, fine with power
Bring the shoes, one by one
With their lines raising StarMasters
All their names under just one

No more time, no more chances
No more scores will be won
In the end Miki hates losers
Hold again all the Eaton

Told the truth like this Marvel
Norrin shines in the sun
On the love Splash left to believe in
In a world under Eaton

Easy to see why you chose to keep it!

Great group shot/splash, congrats on not selling it! ;) Interesting to see how they modified for publication like you described.

So glad you had second thoughts and decided to keep this one, Miki! It's so interesting how they expanded it into a full splash and just got rid of the top panels completely. I agree about the boots on Bill, too.

It reminds me of a time when I and my friends were in our early twenties. Wearing cowboy boots was something of a trend for some people, so no less than 5 of my friends decided it was a cool look and in unison decided it would be a great idea if they all bought a pair. With a look of both shock and disgust, I told them they better not dare go ahead with that plan, because they would all look like losers. Why, if it was trendy? Well, because fashion trends tend to only look good on CERTAIN people, not just anyone. Out of these 5 friends, only one was caucasian, another was Trinidadian and the other 3 were Chinese. How often do you see Chinese and Trinidadian people walking around in cowboy boots? Exactly!

They all told me I knew nothing about fashion because all I ever wore were t-shirts, jeans and running shoes. In return, I told them I may not buy into "fashion trends", but I have a very artistic eye and can easily tell what looks good on someone and what doesn't. It's not just about the outward physical appearance, it's also about your personality and attitude as a person. The fashion choice need to be sympatico with those things as well. They proceeded to ignore my pleas and each went out, bought a pair of cowboy boots, and even had the balls to come back to my house to gloat about how cool they looked. I literally couldn't suppress my laughter (I tried!) and burst out laughing, then got the giggles and couldn't stop for nearly an hour. They looked SO ridiculous! All throughout, the looks on their faces kept going slowly but surely from brash overconfidence to serious concern about whether it was possible that I might actually be right and whether they might all actually look as ridiculous as I told them they'd look. Eventually they all went home and the next time we saw each other, not a single one of them was wearing their cowboy boots. I, of course, had to rub it in and asked them why they weren't wearing their awesome cowboy boots, because they looked so good! They all mumbled something under their breaths with pissed off looks on their faces and changed the subject. Soon thereafter, while visiting them at their respective homes over the next couple of weeks, I saw each of their pair of boots shoved either into the corner of their closets, or buried under piles of other shoes. They had collectively spent over $1,000 on those stupid looking things, and each only wore them once. Since they had been worn outside and the soles and heels were obviously scratched up even after only one usage, they couldn't return them. Some might say that was a very expensive lesson to learn. But I told them to look at it this way: They got off cheaply, because it would've been a lot worse if they had spent all that money and also continued to suffer the humiliation they would've experienced had they continued wearing them!

And that's my fun little anecdote for the day. Not that you asked....😂
