DescriptionNot really much to say about this one. Actually not one of my favorite Dominguez covers (something about the corpse's art bothers me) but the tableau is classic ... as is the surprise and fear in the girl's eyes!Social/Sharing |

Yes, true. It's far from his best, but his best is very, very good. And this great artist manages those nice features that you mention - and comes up with a great composition. I find the shadows very effective as well, as it helps place the spooky action behind the shocked young woman. A nice cover to have in a collection.

Cool way to look at it. I had not noticed the shadows in this one. Thanks!

The soft inking may not make this as hard edged, but theme of the undead is always cool! I like the crosshatched shadows and then the filled deep shadows for this brighter morgue lighting.

The toe tag was actually just "Dozed Off Again" ;)

Okay, I'm so glad I read what you said in your description, after I spent a couple of minutes staring at the unfortunate and glaring issue with the attempt at forced perspective. The body's hand is way too big, in an effort to make it look like it's very close to us, and it's also drawn at an impossible angle. His pronation (turning of the forearm/wrist inward) goes far beyond what humans can actually do. But the real issue is that he drew the woman standing somewhere next to his knees/shins, which would make it impossible for him to reach out and get anywhere near her upper arm, much less grab a hold of it. In order for him to have been able to grab her like that, she would've had to have been drawn standing further back, closer to his upper body. At least far back enough to be next to his hips/waist.

Thank you for putting it in to words! Nailed it.

No worries. As I've always said, in the illustration field, even the best of the best have allowed drawing mistakes to make it into print. It's entirely possible (and I believe probable) that Dominguez even realized as he was finishing the piece that he didn't get the perspective right, but just couldn't fix it or redraw the cover due to the illustrator's long-time eternal nemesis, the dreaded DEADLINE DOOM! But to be perfectly frank, this is part of what I love about illustration. I love that we get to see the artist's best effort under the pressure of those deadlines they're always under, which sometimes include drawing errors. It actually makes the piece a lot more interesting from the point of view that it allows it to become a teaching tool that art collectors and fans can learn about the industry from. Sure, we wouldn't want ALL our pieces to have glaring drawing errors, but having them once in a while is actually very interesting to me. I don't know how many I have in my own collection, but I know it's plenty. And whenever I spend a couple of hours pulling out portfolios to flip through, I really enjoy noticing the errors whenever I catch them because it's an opportunity for me to figure out what may have gone wrong and what could have been done to fix it, had the artists had the time to do so. For me, it really adds an extra element of fun to being a collector of comic book illustration.
By the way, the perspective issue aside, I've always enjoyed the "dead man on the slab suddenly comes to life" trope and that makes it a fun cover, which Dominguez so often produced. I also want to note that he seems to have used a fatter, chunkier line than usual throughout much of this cover, and it reminds me of Jordi Bernet's work in some areas, which is really interesting!

Nice Dominguez bronze horror addition for your collection, congrats Heidjer! The shadow work and overall scene is still great even if it looks odd in certain parts as discussed. Also, I'm not sure the same rules/laws of the capability of human body parts apply to the undead versus the dead of a non re-animted corpse, but that's pure speculation haha.
